Last Call for Summer Foods

The kids start school next week, a glaring reminder that summer is coming to an end. For our last hurrah, we drove up north and spent most of our time by a pool with a couple of trips the local farmers markets. When you’re in Sonoma, I’d recommend Valley of the Moon on Tuesday nights (food, music, and activities for the kids) and Sonoma Valley Certified on Friday mornings (where you’ll find the bejkr but get there early for best bread selection). We found lots of edible treasures like ingredients for a refreshing salad of heirloom tomatoes, watermelon, sweet black-and-white cucumbers, mint, and feta (a new favorite). The kids found the mini donut booth (their new favorite).

Back at the house, garden goodies abound! We were fortunate to find a rental that had a lovely well-kept garden as well as a wild side for our active inquisitive kids. Baskets were filled with everything from limes, grapes, and rosemary to rocks and dry grass (not as nice to photograph). On our final day, friends Conny & Joe came over with an amazing fruit tart. Conny used her grandmother’s crust recipe which I loved, think fresh fruit and whipping cream on top of shortbread. Exactly. I had seconds.

Finally, I can’t help by think of last summer’s flavors as well…

most memorable were found on holiday in England, like fresh figs drizzled with olive oil, marinated Scottish scallops, cheddar on thick toast, and local charcuterie. I can taste it all. Photos taken at the River Cafe, Drunken Duck, and Swan.

Just a subtle reminder to savor these last days!
